  • JON ROSE: State of Play

Two CDs and a 44pp colour booklet (CD only) containing full track details, an illuminating essay and nifty photographs of Rose’s recent projects, various automata and invented instruments – you know what to expect by now; Jon is never short of ideas: 60 years and half a new world are packed into this release. You may not warm to it all – there are no half-measures taken – and although it’s (probably) tougher than listening to that Yes album again, it’s also a mine of lightbulb moments, stimulation, unlikely combinations of psycho-somatic data and proper training for the ears.  On disc one, Jon – playing variously violin, Thai pumpkin soup violin, tenor violin, keyolin, el lubricato (a 20 litre oil-drum with wheel-bows), string clusterfuck violin, slow bow automaton and the St. Sebastian violin – duets with Jim Denley (alto sax), Freya Schack-Arnott (nyckelharpa), Clayton Thomas (double-bass) and Robbie Avenaim (automated and manual percussion). Stylistically diverse doesn’t cover it. Disc two features recent larger-scale projects including: 1) The Web – a 32 string automaton with rotating double plectrum, accompanied by a string ensemble (in tonal and microtonal tunings); 2) the Sydney Harbour Bridge (with choir), 3) a violin (with symphony orchestra), 4), an impossible real-time solo for two banjos, tenor violin, interactive bow and a lot of extremely complicated electronic technology, 5) a very intricate variant on the aolian harp, based on an Australian washing line device), 6) a player-piano driven by MIDI data derived from a recording of a La Vegas casino, duetting with an automated violin driven by data from 24 Wall Street traders and, 7) a classic, exquisite, composition for distressed organ, automatic strings, plectraphone,  two violins, a viol, cello, guitar and monochord. Jon doesn’t keep the tills jingling and even I don’t like every second of everything he does, so why do we keep releasing his records, you ask – because the man is Leonardo da Vinci: Track 3, CD 2. I rest my case.
Also appearing: Jim Denley, Clayton Thomas, Robbie Avenaim, Freya Schack-Arnott, Erkki Veltheim, Elizabeth Welsh, The Song Company, Ilan Volkov, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Cor Fuhler, Claire Edwards, Zubin Kanga and Hollis Taylor.DOWNLOAD WHOLE ALBUM:

  • LUSSIER, RENE: Completement Marteau

Tresor de la Langue has to be one of one of the truly great projects of the last half-century and is (therefore) a very hard act to follow. But on this quietly revolutionary record Rene has found his way to a music that can fairly be described as new; new enough to make it hard to explain, even though it’s easy enough to listen to. For the majority of the pieces here Rene has dispensed with obvious overall form and traditional compositional logic and replaced them with patterns of events; there’s no ABC, no development, no thematic integration, instead we have a kind of experiential logic, a road you share with Rene that’s poly-stylistic, unpredictable, stabilised with rhythms and harmonies when you need them and populated with sounds that exist autonomously, sometimes aren’t obviously connected and often seem to have ben flow in from somewhere else – all tightly bound into something like what Stockhausen called moment form.. with space. Recognised instruments are used, especially electric guitars, contrabass and Daxophone, as well as a host of non-instruments and invented instruments, combined to construct Webern-like orchestral distributions of sounds. Of the seven compositions featured, five probe deeply into the klangfarbenmelodie / event-nexus mode described above; of the other two, one is a tour de force for guitars, electric toothbrushes and snatches of conversation, the other (and the oldest here) is a more conventional work for four contrabasses. These are all studio assemblies, meticulously crafted, deploying their materials with a fine ear for timbre and stereophony. They are also surprisingly attractive and easy to listen to; part lounge, part C20 experimental, part je ne sais quoi. 22 years covered, this collection is like a breath of fresh air; I can’’t recommend it strongly enough.

  • BLAST: Vortographs

Frank Crijns and Dirk Bruinsma deliver four wholly convincing, tightly composed, pieces for guitar, saxophones and vibraphone, fattened and deepened with the sympathetic and unobtrusive use of midi and percussion programming (which in this rare case really works because it’s wholly integrated and does musical things that couldn’t be done any other way. The music, as ever, is highly complex, poly-metric, confident and bemusingly intriguing. If you are familiar with their earlier work, this sounds to me like a coming into maturity of their compositional style; everything finds its proper measure, with dynamic, tempo and colour balances perfectly judged. It’s beautifully recorded with close attention to detail. And its music you can listen to repeatedly, because it sounds different every time; it’ll be many listens before you know what’s coming next. A pleasurable work out for the brain: labyrinthine but somehow soothing. If not now, when? Highly recommended.

  • PAOLO ANGELI: Jar’a

The incomparable Paulo Angelli, who fits no category and whose unique instrument and often apparently impossible playing techniques produce a deep, resonant, nuanced and completely grounded music, never far from a folk root, but enriched with so many strands drawn from the bottomless pool that it escapes genre and seem to talk directly to a shared Western contemporary musical sensibility. And it’s not more of the same, Paulo is ploughing a new furrow again, this time liminally orchestral – he should be writing film scores – with fine attention to detail and unexpected switches of vocabulary. Organised as a six-part suite for prepared Sardinian guitar, vocals, some electronics and guest Omar Bandinu (Sardinian throat singing), this CD follows a more meditative path than earlier releases. It’s music for a darkened room – immersive, borderline psychedelic – even courageous. I don’t know who else could make such a sustained and self-contained statement of dreamlike suspension work. Exemplary recording and mixing. Deep subtext. Highly impressive.

  • BOB DRAKE: Planets and Animals

As always exquisitely recorded, this is a suite of short, dense, twisty, jaw-dropping and highly unusual songs-slash-mini-epics, that ‘give delight and hurt not’ (Wm Shaksper, 1610). It’s a whirlwind. I could go on to extol the man and the work but this is his 10th release for us, so most of you are familiar by now with what he does and how well he does it. If not, just make a start with this immaculate gem of imagination and concision. For this release, Bob has added a small menagerie of invented instruments to his already extensive, acoustic and electronic instrumentarium. Comes with impressive fold-out artwork from the incomparable Joe Mruk.DOWNLOAD WHOLE ALBUM:
