  • TOD DOCKSTADER/JAMES REICHERT: Omniphony


    The legendary collaboration between a leading American Musique Concrete composer and an instrumental ensemble directed by James Reichert where, for I think the first and to date only time, there was full integration of the written, played and manipulated sounds. The instrumental parts were derived from cells’ of concrete sound and in turn were electronically transformed (in Robert Moog’s then state of the art studio), Then the whole mass of material was organised together. A true hybrid, and a one-off. Long out of print since it’s appearance on vinyl in 1966. With two extra pieces by Tod Dockstader a new stereo version of No.7 (from the 1961 8 Electronic Pieces’ and very late and very different – piece from 1990 which has never escaped his studio until now. A classic and a milestone in the evolution of electronic, mediated sound.

  • STEVE MACLEAN ENSEMBLE: GPS


    A journey through complex, composed polyrhythmic pieces interspersed with careful, atmospheric improvisations for guitar, bass, keyboard, percussion and various objects. There is a quiet rigour, almost a formality, about this CD that is rather unusual for the new century – the compositions are not over-elaborated and they follow the parallel metre style of his under-rated classic ‘Opposite of War’. Avoiding overproduction they stay close to the human scale of their performances. And the improvised sections are obviously played, and concern themselves with structure and content rather than effect. In other words, this is an old fashioned record of distinctive compositions, high performance values and imaginative playing.

  • FRED FRITH: Live in Japan



    Concert recordings made at various venues in Japan in 1981 and released by Recommended Records Japan in 1982 in an edition of 1000. Out of print since, though highly sought after, it has now been transferred and remastered by Tom Dimuzio for this official reissue. Fred was just starting out on his long career as a solo improviser when he made this double LP, and still using the now long retired Charles Fletcher custom double-neck guitar (one fretted, one fretless) and the Burns Black Bison, as well as a pilot’s throat mike, a violin and (at one venue) the house piano. Some great music – and an historic and important document.

  • FRED FRITH: Impur part II



    Essentially a pretty great concert by a large 19 strong ensemble with Fred conducting as well as playing. Lots of rhythm, harmony, rock noise, exotic instrumentation, power, complexity and melodic writing, with stretches of chaos, eccentricity and theatre. Totally different, then, from Impur part 1 (ReR FRFC1) which was a deconstructed, spatialised simultaneity of musical events heard through open windows or by wandering through rooms; Impur 2 was an unannounced performance upon which audience members had to stumble (and then collect their friends – or not). The recording here was in fact made a little later, by the same people in a different artspace and has been edited and re-mastered by Fred for this release. It fits well in the aesthetic of earlier group records from Fred: Gravity, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog.
