After 4 years of work on their 11th release for ReR, this extraordinary, reclusive, and highly individual audio-visual collective continues to evolve through the painstaking accumulation and disposition of a seemingly incompatible range of both exotic and familiar musical languages, instruments, techniques and studio manipulations – into one of the few genuinely original bands at work today. It took a long time to refine their unique process of composition to this level of ambiguity and depth, and newcomers will wonder how they strayed so far from orthodoxy and yet managed to retain a lucidity and transparency that is quite rare in contemporary music. Timeless, almost weightless – yet teeming with life, motion and complexity – this is a music that suggests an untroubled world in which nostalgia, tragedy and agon, while rudely present, remain subservient to deeper, calmer currents. A meeting that had to happen: the clash of tradition and experiment has been the distinguishing signature style of both protagonists, and they aren’t holding back on this rather unusual record. Paulo’s virtuosity – and his customised, cello-sized, extended and prepared Sardinian guitar – designed to do several things at once, some of them hardly believable – engages head-on with Iva’s extended violin and take no-prisoners vocalising. Professional recordings made at concerts in Ghent, Prague and Lisbon. Not for the quiet-lifers and faint hearted.

A Limited Edition reissue of the original commemorative cassette released only to subscribers of the first Recommended After Dinner LP – a collection of exquisite live interpretations of the songs, recorded on the band’s first European tour (itself a technically innovative event in which they essentially set up a 5.1 sound system at every concert. Great songs and great performances, full LP length. This CD edition, also includes all the Tokyo recordings released on the ReR Quartlerly 0104 in 1986 and a previously unreleased song, from the 1989 European tour. With full documentation, many new photographs, technical diagrams and an introduction by Haco, who oversaw the whole project. All re-mastered by Bob Drake
