 The first time I heard R. Stevie Moore was when the Residents played me Goodbye Piano – which would have been sometime in early 1978. Soon after that, I got in touch with him to import some copies for Recommended – followed over the years by many of his other releases. Phonography was Stevie’s first, and a masterpiece. Terminally idiosyncratic but with all the compositional qualities of great pop. R Stevie Moore is a gifted songwriter and marches to his own drum – as this strange and compelling record attests. It’s been out of print for some time and we have taken the opportunity to restore it to its original form and carefully re-master it. A classic. ELIO MARTUSCIELLO: Unoccupied Areas
Tightly focused electroacoustic compositions that are austere, rich, strange and brilliantly executed. Elio has an ear like a bat and a serious antipathy toward cliché, and he never relies on repetition for structure; these pieces seem rather to grow out of themselves in surprising but somehow logical ways, like perfect exotic blooms. His is also a music of extremes, never theoretical but always grounded in the grain of the sounds themselves. NIKOLA KODJABASHIA: Explosion Of A Memory
An extended iterative, cycling, dissipating cloud of fragments, constantly shifting focus, which throws up detail, evolves, returns, settles and re-dissolves; it’s a four-dimensional explosion in which stretches of baroque, folk themes and Byzantine liturgy exist contemporaneously alongside modern and (arguably) post-modern materials and techniques, all shaken loose out of the same experiential block, much as strata emerge as tectonic plates fold one time over another. Long, beautiful, tonal stretches eventually emerge, lighter than air, drifting and attenuating to reveal, dreamily, the old simplicities behind. Full use is made of the 70 strong Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra with subtle additional colouration from Kiril Dzajkovsi (live electronics), Nikola Kodjabashia himself (prepared piano) and Chris Cutler (extramural percussion). Immersive, timeless and unmistakably new, this music eschews existing schools to explore instead its own influences and contradictions. Great sound, massive footprint
