  • TIM HODGKINSON: Under The Void



    Three long and recent compositions: Under the Void, scored for flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, 2 violins, 2 violas, cello, bass, piano and percussion, here virtually realised; Then, for virtual strings, brass, woodwinds, accordion and piano -combined with real Siberian frame drums, gongs, viola, electronics, bowed cymbals, lap steel guitar and Yamaha DX21 keyboard assembled by ear in the studio, not from a score, and Ortemchei, scored and assembled from parts of a live performance by Chris Cutler (percussion), Angharad Davies (violin), Edward Lucas (trombone), Mayah Kadish (violin), Alex Paxton (trombone), Lucy Railton (cello), Gwen Reed (bass), Mark Sanders (percussion), Yoni Silver (bass clarinet) and Otto Willberg (bass) – admixed with virtual instruments variously processed and Tim’s additionally recorded bass clarinet, strings, and percussion. A fascinating, full spectrum, journey through inner and/or outer spaces populated with large and small islands of colour/matter/geometry/ timbre and their intimations of scale/distance/
    dynamic/familiarity. It’s an iconoclastic hybrid of materials – real and virtual, imaginary and observed – that works effectively to the advantage of the ear. Tim’s onto something here, I think.

  • PAOLO ANGELI: 22.22 Free Radiohead


    Another great release in which Paulo and his extraordinary extended Sardinian guitar – larger than a standard guitar and augmented with two banks of sympathetic strings, a set of foot operated hammers (each linked to a primary string) and a series of motorised propellers – extrapolate outward from tunes by Radiohead. Hard to credit – as I always say, I know, but true nonetheless – that this is one person and one instrument. And it’s intensely musical. If you know Paulo already (this is his 11th release for us) you’’ll be snapping this one up; if not, start here. A rare talent.

    Norwegian concert recording of the Artaud Beats’ at which Geoff Leigh, John Greaves, Yumi Hara and Chris Cutler produce songs, travelogues and musical narratives off the top of their heads, sometimes intriguing, sometimes almost operatic, sometimes exciting, sometimes at a bit of a loose end – though usually not for long. A plausible document of an interesting project. Digipacked with north of the arctic circle atmospheres, and a charming cartoon.

  • STEVE MACLEAN: Prime


    A collection of new pieces that range across media and genres, mostly exploring prime numbers and the overtone series and featuring various guitars, a grand piano (played and remote-controlled), a quiet drum station, tube bells, assorted percussion, an amplified wire with an Echoplex, a modular synthesizer system – and Moog, Roland, Korg and Smith synths. Also featuring bassoon, five-string bass and drums on various tracks. There are tuneful polyrhythmic compositions, timbre-based works, atmospheric meditations, film-music and some exquisite manipulations of sound. This is Steve’s 9th CD for us so far and in some ways usefully bridges the wide variety of styles and media that have marked his compositions to date. Meticulously produced and mastered.
