  • STEVE MACLEAN: Ordinary Objects and Other Distractions

    In this episode, a number of short recordings of household objects and curious instruments become the core thematic material for a range of exquisitely conceived and realised pieces in which the recordings are shaped, stretched, tuned, combined and otherwise manipulated before being folded into a variety of musical structures with additional elements or parts added. Much use is made of rhythms derived from gravity – that is, dropping and bouncing – embedded into microtonal, poly-rhythmic and deeply engaging structures. Steve has been a hard sell in some ways, like Jon Rose, Biota and Bob Drake. But we think that, in the end, quality will out.

    14 pieces originally written for dance and other practical situations, here reassigned and reconstructed for choreographer Amanda Miller and the Nederland Dans Theater.These are loop-based, textural, mood pieces, and invocations of spaces and landscapes, with some fine steel guitar playing. Mostly this is Fred multi-instrumenting, with pianist Daan Vanderwalle, percussionist Willie Wynant, the Arte Sax quartet and Lotte Anker, the Arditti Quartet, Kiku Day, occasional shakuhachi, and violinist/nykelharpist Karla Kihlstedt.     Written for theatre in 1987 using a host of avian and mammalian voices, snippets of unidentified musical material and electroacoustic noise- sculpting, as well as invented and real instruments played by Fred. This was a hard time and the mood is intense, lean and not cheerful, though there are some gruesomely cheery inserts. There’s no fat but a lot of meat here.

    ALLEN RAVENSTINE - PHAROAH
    Allen Ravenstine, erstwhile eminence grise of classic-era Pere Ubu, was one of the best-integrated and least predictable pioneers of analogue synthesis in rock until, in the late 1980’s, he quit both the public and the musical arena to pursue entirely different interests. But he never lost his interest in, or his feel for, analogue electronics. A few years ago, with Pere Ubu’s current synthesist, Robert Wheeler, he recorded ‘Farm Report and City Desk – in the context of a documentary about modular synthesisers. Now he is releasing this limited edition solo CD, reaching back to the glory days of Princeton and Cologne in its acceptance and celebration of the almost human, frail, fallible, delicate and mysterious qualities of handmade analogue electronics.
